Halloween pumpkinsIt’s been a busy week! Lot’s of painting (yay!), a little bit of Christmasy stuff and yet up until last night we still had my husbands animated pumpkins in our dining room. I do respect his hobby, and his animated/singing pumpkins are pretty cool (they sang Monster Mash this year) – BUT, Halloween has been over for over a month and it’s hard to get in the Christmas spirit when you are looking at orange! So last night after considerable (and repeated) ‘reminders’, he moved the pumpkins to the basement. Now we can move on to Christmas.

Frosting and Yarn don't mix!So getting in the Christmas spirit, my running/knitting friend decided we should make a gingerbread house wrapped in yarn to support a Micah’s Backpack fundraiser. A yarn house sounded very creative and yet when you google gingerbread houses wrapped in yarn…there’s a reason why there are none! Hmm… Maybe because yarn and frosting don’t mix. Not sure what we were thinking – trying to glue it together with frosting just made a massive mess. So after realizing we were going to need some other form of adhesive power, we powered up the glue guns, and with the help of a massive number of glue sticks, we got the thing together! I think it turned out rather cute.Yarn wrapped gingrebread house complete! Thanks Shannon for your very creative idea –  and  now there should be a Google entry for YWGHs (Yarn Wrapped Gingerbread Houses)!

My two teen boys thought the gingerbread house contest was something we should do as a family as well, so I bought another kit and set aside some time to do this (ahem) family project. Not surprisingly, their idea of a family project and my idea were totally different. My youngest searched Pinterest for really cool but impossibly hard to execute ideas of gingerbread houses and convinced me that we couldn’t just stick with the basic kit – we needed an addition to win. My oldest never got beyond eating the decorations – oh and he was the one who suggested the mini wheat roof top which he said needed to be individually cut in order to look best (but do you think he actually cut any of those shingles? nope. So I bought another kit and ended up by myself struggling on how to add this fancy addition. In the end it turned out pretty well (I especially like how Matthew’s suggestion of the pond turned out).
